Musician, composer, curator, producer, and Pew Fellow Matthew Levy is best known for his work as a founding member and executive director of the world-renowned PRISM Quartet. “Sum of Its Parts,” his first solo recording on XAS, features electro-acoustic works by rising star composers Emma O’Halloran and Jacob Walls that utilize elements of Levy’s performance practice—from subtones and percussive articulation to growls, multiphonics, and microtones—to form a soundtrack of otherworldly textures for his live tenor sax. In his liner notes, Steve Smith describes the project as “unexpected, and beautiful…a vivid demonstration of the bold vision that Levy has demonstrated throughout his career as a soloist, a collaborator, and an entrepreneurial leader.”
