PRISM Quartet

Master Class and Panel Discussion with Ries and Zenón at The University of the Arts: Heritage/Evolution 2

The PRISM Quartet and The University of the Arts present a series of three back-to-back master classes and panel discussions. Saxophonists/composers Rudresh Mahanthappa, Steve Lehman, Tim Ries, Miguel Zenón, David Liebman, and Greg Osby will work in pairs with student jazz ensembles. Master classes will be followed by panel discussions, moderated by John Schaefer (host of WNYC’s New Sounds and Sound Check), addressing the unique challenges of collaborating across genres to create work that blends divergent performance and compositional practices. The panel will explore commonalities and differences among their ways of improvising and creating music, and discuss the artistic, cultural, and social implications of the ongoing cross pollination of jazz with a vast range of other music, including classical and folk music.

9:30 – 11:00 am: Master class with Tim Ries & Miguel Zenón

11:10 am – 12:30 pm: Panel discussion Ries, Zenón, & PRISM Quartet members, moderated by John Schaefer
