PRISM Quartet with Orchestra: Concertos for Saxophone Quartet
“[Bolcom’s Concerto Grosso], a jazzy update of a showy baroque form, highlighted the PRISM Quartet’s flair for syncopated rhythms, bluesy turns and improvised cadenzas. The soloists took ownership of the work, which they had commissioned. Ling and the [Cleveland] orchestra came along for the fun-filled ride.” —Cleveland Plain Dealer
“Arguably the preeminent saxophone ensemble of its kind currently active in the United States … PRISM has presided over what future music history textbooks might just look back on as a golden era for the sax quartet medium.” —NewMusicBox
PRISM Quartet’s concerto performances with the Cleveland Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and many others have been hailed by critics and audiences alike. PRISM champions an exhilarating new repertoire of saxophone quartet concertos, including works written especially for the quartet by two quintessentially American composers: Pulitzer Prize winner William Bolcom and Guggenheim Fellow Steven Mackey. Both works are featured on PRISM’s innova release Concertos for Saxophone Quartet, with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. PRISM also performs concertos by the iconic Philip Glass and Pulitzer Prize winner Steven Stucky, as well as Chen Yi’s Ba Yin (The Eight Sounds), a work for saxophone quartet and string orchestra, and Fazıl Say’s Preludes, Op. 63.
