Philadelphia Story

PRISM Quartet presents a concert of works by master and student composers with deep ties to the City of Brotherly Love.

The program features three works composed for the PRISM: Josquin Microludes by David Serkin Ludwig which the composer describes as “a set of miniatures that incorporates Josquin’s Mille Regretz into its musical language, as if channel surfing between ancient music and contemporary sounds.” Cha by Julia Wolfe and dedicated to the memory of her father. Wolfe writes: “My favorite memory is dancing the cha-cha-cha with my father. He would hit the dance floor and take me along with him. The piece takes the cha cha as a starting point and create a joyful deconstruction/exaggeration of the style for the sax quartet.” The program also includes Short Stories, a set of poignant vignettes by PRISM’s friend and long-time collaborator James Primosch (1956-2021), to honor his memory and musical legacy.

PRISM also recognizes a new generation of composer with premiere performances of new works by four talented composition students, each representing one of the four major music institutions in Philadelphia: Elise Arancio (pictured), Curtis Institute of Music; Brendan McMullen, University of Pennsylvania; Gloria Quinn, University of the Arts; and Sepehr Pirasteh, Temple University Boyer College of Music and Dance. All four works were commissioned as part of the Philadelphia Student Composers Project under the direction of Erin Busch with support from the the University of Pennsylvania’s Sach’s Program for Arts Innovation.
